Premier League Refereeing Under Fire as Arsenal Demand Answers Hours After VAR Admission

Arsenal have demanded a meeting with Premier League refereeing body Pro Ref over another disputed VAR decision, just hours after the organisation admitted officials got Manchester City’s derby winner wrong.

The club contacted Pro Ref on Monday following the penalty awarded against Arsenal during their 2-0 victory at Sunderland.

Goalkeeper David Raya saved the spot kick, meaning the decision ultimately had no effect on the result.

Mikel Arteta was nevertheless furious.

The Arsenal manager described the decision as “unacceptable at this level” and questioned why VAR failed to intervene.

Arsenal now want an explanation and are expected to raise previous refereeing decisions during talks with Pro Ref.

On its own, it would be another Premier League dispute over VAR.

The timing makes it considerably more significant.

Two major clubs, two VAR disputes in 24 hours

Pro Ref is already dealing with the fallout from Sunday’s Manchester derby.

Manchester City’s winning goal was initially ruled out for offside before VAR intervened and overturned the decision.

Pro Ref subsequently admitted VAR had made an “error of judgement” by failing to properly consider the involvement of an offside Enzo Fernández.

Manchester United were contacted by the refereeing body and the incident is being reviewed.

Now Arsenal have opened another front.

Unlike the Manchester derby incident, Pro Ref has not admitted that the Sunderland penalty decision was wrong.

And because Raya saved it, Arsenal were not denied points.

That isn’t really the bigger issue.

VAR exists precisely because some incidents are difficult for an on-field referee to judge in real time. Its purpose is to provide another layer of scrutiny when potentially decisive errors occur.

Within 24 hours, one of England’s biggest clubs has received an admission that VAR failed in a match-deciding incident while another has formally sought answers over why VAR did not intervene in a decision its manager considers indefensible.

Individual refereeing mistakes will always happen.

The more difficult question for Pro Ref is why the additional system designed to catch them is itself becoming the focus of the controversy.
