European Pressure on Infantino Grows as Greek FA Withdraws Support

The Greek Football Association has withdrawn its support for Gianni Infantino’s re-election as FIFA president as European opposition to his leadership continues to grow.

Greek FA president Makis Gagatsis said his federation had taken a “clear position” against another Infantino candidacy.

Gagatsis cited events surrounding the 2026 World Cup and Infantino’s abandoned proposal to sell a commercial stake in FIFA competitions to private investors.

“We withdrew our support of the FIFA president,” he said after a UEFA Executive Committee meeting in Thessaloniki.

Former Germany national-team director Oliver Bierhoff also backed a change in FIFA leadership, saying recent events had destroyed confidence that world football was moving in the right direction.

The Greek decision adds to wider European opposition.

Several European national associations have withdrawn their support for Infantino’s re-election, while UEFA has said leadership change is necessary following the collapse of the commercial-stake proposal.

FIFA abandoned the plan and apologised to member associations.

Infantino nevertheless intends to seek re-election in March 2027.

His European opponents now face a more difficult task: finding somebody capable of defeating him.

Reuters reports that no clear challenger has emerged, while Infantino retains substantial support among federations outside Europe.

European officials have until November 18 to nominate an alternative candidate.
