Bolivian football authorities have opened an investigation after a goalkeeper was allegedly threatened with the murder of his wife and mother unless he conceded at least three goals.
Guabirá goalkeeper Juan Manuel Ferrel received the alleged threat before Sunday’s top-flight match against Always Ready, according to his coach Leonardo Egüez.
Ferrel was allegedly told to pay an unspecified sum of money or allow at least three goals.
Guabirá lost the match 6-0.
Ferrel started in goal but was substituted before half-time, after Guabirá had already conceded the number of goals specified in the alleged threat.
The Bolivian Football Federation has now announced an investigation into the threats and whether there was an attempt to manipulate the match.
Bolivia’s professional footballers’ union has also called for an immediate investigation.
Guabirá player Víctor Ábrego said Ferrel told teammates about the threat and that he became frightened enough to want to leave the pitch himself.
Ábrego reportedly feared what could happen if he scored and interfered with the outcome demanded by whoever allegedly threatened Ferrel.
Always Ready has supported calls for an investigation and says it wants the integrity of the result established.
Guabirá has not accused Always Ready of involvement in the alleged threats.
No finding of match manipulation has been made.
