Lionel Messi has been invited to make one final appearance for Argentina just weeks after announcing his international retirement.
Argentine FA president Claudio Tapia says the 39-year-old has been invited to face Benin at the Monumental in Buenos Aires on October 6.
The match is intended as a farewell appearance rather than a reversal of Messi’s retirement.
Messi called time on his international career last month following Argentina’s defeat to Spain in the 2026 World Cup final.
That left the World Cup final as his last competitive appearance for his country.
A farewell against Benin would instead give Argentine supporters the opportunity to see Messi in the national shirt one final time on home soil.
Messi ends his international career as Argentina’s all-time leading appearance-maker and goalscorer after more than two decades representing his country.
Now Argentina wants one last night at the Monumental.
