Dutch rail authorities are investigating suspected sabotage after materials were deliberately placed on railway tracks at several locations, disrupting trains and level crossings during Tuesday morning’s rush hour.
Infrastructure operator ProRail said the objects caused track-circuit failures across parts of central and northern Netherlands.
The disruption affected rail services as well as road traffic at level crossings.
Thousands of commuters were stranded around Zwolle, Deventer and Amersfoort, according to the Associated Press.
ProRail said the materials appeared to have been deliberately placed on the tracks.
No perpetrator has been identified and authorities have not established a motive.
The incident is being investigated.
