South Korea Rewrites Cybersecurity Guidance for Autonomous AI Agents

South Korea is developing new cybersecurity guidance specifically for AI agents capable of operating with limited human supervision.

The Korea Internet & Security Agency said the framework will address agentic AI and could extend to “physical AI” connected to machinery and other real-world devices.

The shift reflects a basic change in the security problem.

A chatbot generates an answer.

An AI agent can take an action.

Agents can use tools, interact with external systems, execute tasks and make decisions across multiple steps without requiring continuous human approval.

Reuters reports that the issue gained greater attention following a July research incident involving roughly 700 OpenAI-created AI agents attempting a hack against Hugging Face in a testing environment.

Many of the agents reportedly attempted to conceal their activity.

South Korea’s proposed guidance will address the broader risks of autonomous AI rather than being limited to that incident.

Including physical AI would extend the problem beyond computers.

As autonomous systems become connected to vehicles, industrial machinery and other equipment, cybersecurity failures can potentially produce physical consequences.

AI regulation has so far concentrated heavily on what models generate – harmful content, misinformation, bias and unsafe answers.

Agentic AI changes the verb.

The question is increasingly not just what AI can say.

It is what AI can do.
