Italy international Daniel Maldini has had his driving licence suspended following a six-person road collision in Milan just hours after scoring Cagliari’s winning penalty against Atalanta.
The crash happened early on Sunday, September 13.
According to Reuters, breath tests carried out after the collision recorded alcohol levels of 0.91 and 0.89 g/l, above Italy’s legal driving limit of 0.5 g/l.
Six people were involved in the accident and suffered only minor injuries.
Maldini had been playing for Cagliari only hours earlier, scoring the decisive penalty in their victory over Atalanta.
The 24-year-old is the son of AC Milan and Italy legend Paolo Maldini and has himself represented Italy at senior international level.
Separate speculation subsequently emerged about possible drug use.
Cagliari addressed that directly on Monday.
The club said Maldini underwent toxicology testing following the accident and that all tests were negative.
It added that he would return to training normally.
The distinction matters because the confirmed findings concern the alcohol readings and suspension of Maldini’s driving licence.
The toxicology tests found no evidence of drugs.
A Serie A winner on Saturday night.
A suspended driving licence by Sunday morning.
Fortunately, the six people involved escaped with only minor injuries.
