Boris Johnson and other senior Western figures travelled along a railway near the Polish border minutes before a Russian drone struck a passenger train on the same route.
The passenger train was hit just 2 kilometres from Poland on the Kyiv–Warsaw rail corridor.
No casualties were reported.
Former Swedish prime minister Carl Bildt, who was travelling with the Western delegation, said the struck train had been only minutes behind theirs.
The Guardian reports that former CIA director David Petraeus was also among the delegation.
Ukraine’s railway operator says it is “entirely possible” that the diplomatic train was the intended target because its departure time had been altered owing to the threat of attack.
TWO STRIKES ON NATO’S DOORSTEP
The incident follows another Russian strike near Poland earlier today.
A truck was hit near the Dorohusk–Yahodyn border crossing, around 800 metres from Polish territory.
Now a passenger train has been struck 2 kilometres from Poland on a route used by senior Western officials.
Polish foreign minister Radosław Sikorski has described the pattern as an escalation.
Neither attack crossed into Polish territory.
