Manchester United have rejected JJ Gabriel’s request to cancel his registration, but the 15-year-old and his representatives are now in Barcelona discussing a potential move to the Spanish champions.

United still hope to persuade one of their most highly rated academy players to remain at Old Trafford, but Sky Sports reports that his departure is looking increasingly likely.

The latest development follows growing interest in Gabriel from major European clubs and turns the situation into a more immediate battle over his future.

United refuse release request

Gabriel had asked Manchester United to release him from his registration with the club.

United have refused that request and remain determined to retain the forward.

However, Gabriel and his representatives have travelled to Barcelona for talks over a possible move to Barça, according to Sky Sports.

The discussions do not mean a transfer has been agreed.

Gabriel remains registered with Manchester United and, because of his age, any international move would also have to comply with FIFA’s rules governing transfers involving minors.

Possible route after 16th birthday

Gabriel turns 16 on October 6.

Press Association reporting says there could be a route under FIFA regulations allowing him to join a European club after reaching that age, although any move would still require FIFA approval.

The regulatory position is therefore an important part of what happens next.

Manchester United can refuse Gabriel’s request to cancel his registration while continuing attempts to convince him that his future should remain at Old Trafford.

But the Barcelona talks show that his representatives are actively exploring alternatives.

Previous reports had placed Real Madrid prominently among the clubs interested in Gabriel.

Barcelona have now moved directly into the picture, with talks taking place while United continue to resist his departure.

For Manchester United, the immediate issue is no longer simply interest from Europe’s biggest clubs.

They are trying to keep a 15-year-old academy prospect who has asked to leave while his representatives discuss a potential future with Barcelona.
