Anthropic Chooses Nasdaq for IPO After CEO Calls for AI Slowdown

Stock market bull, artificial intelligence imagery and balance scales outside a financial exchange at sunset

Anthropic has reportedly selected Nasdaq for a potential October IPO that could value the AI company at around $2 trillion, one day after CEO Dario Amodei called for frontier AI development to slow down.

Reuters reports that Anthropic has chosen Nasdaq for the proposed listing, citing Business Insider and a person familiar with the plans.

The IPO could raise as much as $100 billion, according to previous Reuters reporting.

The timing is striking.

Amodei warned yesterday that frontier AI capabilities are advancing faster than safeguards and called for leading laboratories to slow capability development.

Anthropic is simultaneously preparing for what could become one of the largest IPOs in history.

SAFETY MEETS THE STOCK MARKET

The contrast with OpenAI is particularly sharp.

Sam Altman says OpenAI will not pursue a 2026 IPO, citing unresolved questions around AI safety and alignment.

Anthropic is heading towards the public markets while its own CEO argues that the underlying technology needs greater restraint.

Going public would introduce another powerful constituency into that debate: shareholders.

Public markets reward revenue growth, expanding market share and returns on enormous amounts of invested capital.

AI safety may sometimes require doing precisely the opposite: delaying deployment or refusing to pursue capabilities that competitors continue developing.

That creates a question Anthropic may eventually have to answer every quarter:

Can voluntary AI restraint survive shareholder pressure for growth?
