An Iranian commercial vessel has been hit by a projectile in the Strait of Hormuz, killing one person and wounding at least three. The ship caught fire and those aboard were evacuated.
Iranian state media identified the vessel after the attack near Qeshm Island on Sunday.
AP reports four people wounded. Reuters reports three.
No responsibility has been established.
The attack comes immediately before Iran meets regional states in Oman on Monday over proposed arrangements for managing traffic through Hormuz.
Tehran is seeking recognition of a greater Iranian role in the Strait, including the right to charge vessels for passage.
That creates an extraordinary question for Monday’s talks:
Iran wants greater authority over Hormuz. Who takes responsibility for keeping it safe?
Before the current conflict, roughly one-fifth of global oil supply passed through the Strait.
Saudi Arabia’s principal alternative, the East-West pipeline, has itself just been attacked and temporarily shut.
Hormuz is therefore becoming more important at precisely the moment commercial shipping through it is becoming more dangerous.
And one critical fact remains unanswered:
Who fired the projectile?
