Amazon has blocked Meta’s new Muse AI agent from shopping on Amazon.com on behalf of users, creating an early confrontation over whether autonomous AI assistants should have the same access to online services as the people who authorise them. Bloomberg reports that Amazon began blocking Muse after Meta declined a request to remove the retailer from the agent’s shopping experience.

Meta launched Muse on 8 September as a personal AI agent capable of operating a browser and completing tasks rather than simply providing instructions. It can fill in forms, book services and make purchases with user approval. That ability means the agent needs to interact directly with websites, but Amazon is now refusing to allow it to do so on its retail platform.

Amazon says third-party shopping agents should identify themselves and respect a service provider’s decision over whether they are permitted to participate. The company has also raised concerns about how Muse handles customer credentials. Meta disputes the security implications, saying Muse operates inside a dedicated secure virtual machine and cannot itself see users’ passwords or payment details. Credentials are stored separately so the agent can use them without viewing them.

The dispute highlights a problem likely to become more important as autonomous agents move into everyday commerce. If someone authorises an AI to find a product, compare options and complete a purchase, the agent is effectively acting as that person’s digital representative. Online platforms must then decide whether to treat that software like the customer or as a separate automated service that can be restricted or excluded.

That makes the Amazon-Meta confrontation more than a disagreement between two technology companies. It is an early test of who controls the gateways through which autonomous AI agents will operate. Meta has built an AI agent capable of shopping for its users; Amazon has decided that, on its store, the agent is not welcome.
